Miscellaneous MOSFET notes.

I mentioned early on in this blog that other MOSFETs could work, and they will work in most cases as long as they are in circuits that are within their peak ratings. Continue reading

Higher Current regulation.

So why not use MOSFETS? You certainly can. I did some testing applying the output of the LM317 basic adjustable regulator to the Gate of an “N” Channel MOSFET, configured as a Gate follower mode connection. The actual MOSFET I used was an IRFZ46N “HEXFET.” I did not test to full current, nor test for longevity because I could not deliver enough test current with the equipment I had on hand. Of voltage/level detectors and even higher current.

With a higher current on the input side of the regulator, this demands multiple transistors for adequate regulation. By driving a 2N3055 transistor with the regulator IC’s output to increase that current handling output to the array of transistors to be used for regulation, you increase the power capability of the basic regulator even more. Expanding the simple and basic regulator.

With the addition of a couple of passive components, this makes either the LM 317 or LM350 truly adjustable regulator as you saw previously. Continue reading
