You do want to have the adjustability so you can fine tune the system so it is not trying to charge at full output at all times- unlike a car or truck, it does not need to go to full charging rate. A moderate rate of 20 Amps will recharge quite effectively, as will 10 Amps. Continue reading →

The use of Zeners in alternative energy circuits in general is rather limited though, and they really require isolation to limit their load on the circuit which can be dissipating energy you may want for your battery.
